Background: Composting schemes often face problems in marketing their product as a market analysis and sales strategy were not appropriately considered from the starting point of the venture. The limited sales options therefore threaten the long term viability of a newly established composting scheme in low and middle income countries.

Background: Composting schemes often face problems in marketing their product as a market analysis and sales strategy were not appropriately considered from the starting point of the venture. The limited sales options therefore threaten the long term viability of a newly established composting scheme in low and middle income countries. Therefore PWEG in coordination with Sandec (Water and Sanitation in Developing Countries) at Eawag (Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology) started a market research in Palestine to Sandecs Compost Marketing Handbook: Marketing Compost - A Handbook for Compost Producers in Low- and Middle Income Countries which is based on a proper market analysis as the key factor for a successful composting scheme.

Study Objectives

  • Testing Sandecs Compost Marketing Handbook in a real case in Palestine including the following activities:
    • Analyze market segments and potential customers group.
    • Asses and calculate potential market demand for compost in the West Bank.
    • Elaborate a marketing strategy.
  • To provide feed back to author (weakness and strengths) for further amendment of the handbook

Benefits of the study:

  • A marketing strategy would amend a business plan
  • The study reveals concrete figures on compost demand and market potentials
  • As final product, a marketing concept is at hand
  • Capacity on market research and marketing has been established
