Off-Grid Desalination for Irrigation in the Jordan Valley

Off-Grid Desalination for Irrigation in the Jordan Valley

Funded by British Council, this project aims to design and establish a small scale off grid desalination plant.

The system depends on solar power for desalinating the salty groundwater. The desalinated water is then used in irrigating crops that require fresh water. This system has high efficiency in conserving energy, in addition to desalinating more than 70% of the salty feed water.

The main challenges are; the water in the Jordan Valley is extremely salty, also the high implementing and running cost of the desalination system and the lack of expert technicians. Hence, the project’s goals are; to provide a cheap and efficient desalination system, to provide expert technicians in running and maintaining the system, to use the desalinated fresh water in irrigating crops. Finally, to publish scientific papers and conduct training and workshops.
