Objective of the Meeting
To present the state of the art of
research and work on greywater treatment and reuse in the
Middle East region at a conference that brings together
regional and also some international knowledge on greywater
Form of the Meeting
This meeting was designed as a forum
where MENA based researchers and practitioners involved in
greywater would present their work – the state of the art on
greywater research and action – in order to draw out and
debate various themes on the topic. A call for papers was
distributed in Fall, 2006, and fifteen were selected for
presentation. These papers will provide the basis for a
monograph modeled after the IWMI-IDRC publication:
“Wastewater Use in Irrigated Agriculture”. Such a book will
be the first of its kind on greywater.
There were 33 participants representing 17 institutions that
attended the meeting. Billed as a “stock taking meeting”,
the event was an assessment of a) what we know; b) what we
need to know; c) where do we go in the future. It was a
complete success for answering the first two points,
however, the third point still needs more agreement since
there was simply not enough time to develop a detailed
action plan.
Participants were also asked to
address several critical questions:
• How do we balance the economic and environmental
benefits of greywater with the need to mitigate the
potential health and environmental risks?
• How can we raise the profile of greywater amongst policy
makers and promote its widespread use?
• How can we raise the profile of greywater amongst the
public and promote its widespread use?
• What is the message that we want others (water managers,
policy makers, researchers) to hear about greywater?
