-- Strengthen Financial Capacities of Bethlehem JSCSWM

The project will improve the overall financial viability of the joint service council of solid waste management (JSCSWM) and this will be positively reflected on the financial viability of the 38 local authorities’ members of the JSCSWM, the project will increase the capacities of the JSCSWM, by training its staff on the establishment of a cost recovery SWM tariff.

  

Being targeted by the TV and Radio spots, taking part to public meetings, hearings and demonstration activities, the population will be informed about the JSCSWM mission and about local authorities’ plans with regard to SWM. Resident will have the chance to express its vision and opinion and will participate in the decision making, empowering both JSCSWM and the community itself.

Project Name: Support to the Bedouins breeders in the south – Hebron

 

Project Area: Villages of Zuweideen, Um al Kher and Najada. To the south east of Hebron

 

Project Funded by: Italian Cooperation

 

Project area description: semi desert arid zone, the poorest area in Palestine, with three thousand people depending on growing livestock. There are three schools in the area of intervention. There are permanent water supply in the three villages, water is supplied by the Israeli water company via the West Bank Water Department.

 

Objectives:

-         Creation of a new unconventional water resource to be utilized in agriculture and saving of fresh water for drinking purposes.

-         Improving the living conditions of the Bedouin families in the villages of Zuweideen, Um al Kher and Najada.

-         Improvement of public health and protection of water resources and environment

-          Increase public awareness relative to environment and natural resources

-- Operation & Maintenance of Small Scale Wastewater Treatment Plants & Management of Green Houses

The project focus on training the beneficiaries including members from the local authorities and women association in operation and maintenance of house hold small scale  wastewater treatment plants and reusing treated effluent in irrigation under green houses. This is the first experience al over the world where treated grey wastewater is reused in protected and intensive agriculture at house hold level. This is the first project in the world where treated grey wastewater is reused in  drip irrigation system irrigating vegetables cultivated under green houses.

PWEG in coordination with Sandec (Water and Sanitation in Developing Countries) at Eawag (Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology) started a market research in Palestine to Sandecs Compost Marketing Handbook: Marketing Compost - A Handbook for Compost Producers in Low- and Middle Income Countries which is based on a proper market analysis as the key factor for a successful composting scheme.

-- Field investigation on ground water pollution by untreated WW

Project Description:

Field investigation on discharge of WW and it’s effects to the environment, special focus on pollution of groundwater. The path of sewage from urban, village and industrial communities in the project area is described and analyzed. Maps showing the discharge locations and the path of wastewater are attached to the report. Analysis of the characteristics of discharged wastewater is made in different locations and sites.
